Wage increase without collective labor agreement? This is how you arrange that

A higher wage is often the outcome of collective labor agreements, but not every company has a collective labor agreement. How do you ensure a pay increase if your employer does not have a collective labor agreement?

“Zonder cao ben je afhankelijk van je eigen assertiviteit”, zegt Gertjan Tommel van vakbond De Unie. “Weet dus wat je waard bent en wijs je werkgever op jouw expertises, ook als je bijvoorbeeld een keer medewerker van de maand bent geweest.”

Daarnaast is het volgens Tommel belangrijk om in de gaten te houden wat er in ‘cao-land’ gebeurt. Zo is de gemiddelde cao-loonstijging dit jaar 7,4 procent, meldt werkgeversvereniging AWVN. Die stijging is stukken hoger dan in andere jaren.

Je kunt de gemiddelde loonstijging aankaarten bij je werkgever en als uitgangspunt nemen voor jouw eigen loonsverhoging. Het eindejaarsgesprek kan hier een goed moment voor zijn.

Wage increase is not mandatory

A collective labor agreement may contain agreements about an annual wage increase. Tied employers must adhere to this. Without a collective labor agreement, an employer is not obliged to increase wages; the law does not regulate salary increases.

However, the wage must be equal to or higher than the minimum wage. The minimum wage will increase in 2024 from 12.79 euros (36 hours) to 13.27 euros gross. All employers must adhere to this.

“If you ask for a pay increase several times, but your boss does not want to give it, it may be worthwhile to look for a job elsewhere,” says Tommel. “You take the biggest salary step when you change jobs.”
