Karachi: Pakistan pace bowler Wahab Riaz has announced his retirement from international cricket. This marks the beginning of a 15-year international career. However, Wahab Riaz said that he will continue to play franchise cricket.
He played in 27 Tests, 91 ODIs and 36 Twenty20s for Pakistan. He took 83 wickets at an average of 34.50 in Tests. In 2010, he made his maiden Test against England at the Oval by taking five wickets for 63 runs. Wahab Riaz became the ninth Pakistani player to take a five-wicket haul on debut. The left-arm pacer took 120 wickets in ODIs and 34 wickets in T20Is. The star’s best performance in limited overs cricket was in the ODI World Cup semi-final against India in Mohali when he conceded 46 runs and took five wickets.
Despite taking wickets, Wahab Riaz’s propensity to give away runs in controlled over matches has been a setback for him. In August 2016, the player conceded 110 runs without a wicket in 10 overs against England in Nottingham. This performance made Wahab Riaz second in the list of bowlers who conceded most runs in a match in ODIs. Australia’s Michael Lewis, who conceded 113 runs in 10 overs, is on the first place in this shame. Lewis’ performance was against South Africa in March 2006.
Wahab, who is 38 years old, has recently hinted at becoming active in politics. In January this year, Caretaker was serving as Sports Minister in the Punjab Provincial Government.
