“WALK IN DIFFERENT SHOES” – International Women’s Day 8.3.2023

Am INTERNATIONALEN FRAUENTAGon March 8th, 2023, the Soroptimists would also like to see the still existing one UNGLEICHHEIT THE GESCHLECHTER draw attention to it and call for it”IN UNTERSCHIEDLICHEN SCHUHEN TO RUN”.

Unfortunately, the genders are still treated unequally in many areas. It is women and girls who are worse off than men and boys due to more difficult access to education, lower wages, poorer old-age and health care, violence and unpaid care work.

129 million girls are out of school worldwide, only 49% of countries have achieved gender parity in primary education. In Europe, women earn on average 13% less than men for work of equal value.

According to the AND almost 50% of pregnancies worldwide are unwanted. Lack of access to sexual and reproductive health services has a serious impact on women from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Sociocultural factors that prevent women and girls from accessing quality health services and achieving the best possible level of health include:

  • unequal power relations between men and women
  • social norms that reduce opportunities for education and paid work
  • an exclusive focus on the reproductive role of women and
  • potential or actual experiences of physical, sexual and emotional violence

From a report by WHO 2018: 30% (= 736 million) of women worldwide have experienced intimate sexual violence.

The total number of child brides today is estimated at 650 million (including girls under 18 who are already married and adult women who married when they were children). That is about 21% of all young women worldwide. In the last decade, the proportion of young women who were married as children has fallen by 15% (from 1 in 4 to 1 in 5).

Unequal representation at government level (worldwide)
As of September 19, 2022, there are only 28 countries that have 30 women leaders. At the current pace, gender equality in the highest positions of power will be 130 years from now.

The 5 portfolios most frequently occupied by women ministers are: Family/Children/Youth/Elderly/Disabled, followed by Social Affairs, Environment/Natural Resources/Energy, Employment/Labour/Vocational Training and Women’s Affairs/Equality.

So… let’s dance with colorful feet and walk through the area… and let’s create “awareness” for this important topic together!!!
