The Walloon deficit for 2023 will be reduced by 166 million euros. It will therefore drop below the three billion mark. This is one of the achievements of the budgetary control which took place all this week and which ended on Friday. Among the many topics discussed: the car registration tax. Its calculation will change for all vehicles that will be purchased from July 2025.
In Wallonia, the tax for putting this city car into circulation is currently €123, from July 2025, you will pay less, i.e. €90:

The principle chosen by the government
The new calculation of the tax will vary according to the pollution emitted by the car and according to the weight of the vehicle. “The floor is fifty euros. The maximum is 9,000 euros, when you have really very polluting and very powerful cars. So we are not very far from the current scope (range), but we are recalibrating to really encourage small models and the least polluting models“, indicates Philippe Henry, Walloon Minister of Climate and Mobility. The objective, “it’s to switch from a gasoline car, a diesel car, to an electric car, and the smaller the car, the less heavy it is, the less you pay“, specifies the Walloon Minister-President, Elio Di Rupo.
Another example with a larger and therefore heavier car, this sedan will go from €1,239 to €1,477 in the new calculation system:

In short, the heavier and more powerful the car, the more the tax increases. “If you have a low-polluting vehicle, which is thermal and low-polluting, you will be lower in taxation. If you have a lighter, less powerful vehicle, you will also be lower than the market average. And electric ones are also encouraged with a proportionality where we will have higher taxes for large electric ones. On the other hand, for small and medium electric vehicles, we really have an encouragement to go towards this type of motorization“, specifies Philippe Henry.
Discounts for certain profiles
Reductions are provided for large families and parents in shared custody. This system will also apply to used vehicles.
The Walloon government hopes that the prices of electric cars will drop between now and the entry into force of its reform to approach the amounts of the taxes practiced in Flanders.
