The line is open: in the face of the escalation of the conflict in UkraineAmerican and Russian soldiers have established between them a new telephone channel, supposed to be used in case of emergency, announced Friday the Pentagon.
This line, set up”a few days ago“, directly links the American command in Europe to the Russian ministry of Defense, indicated the spokesman of the Pentagon, John Kirby.
“We know it works” he assured. “When we tested it, they picked up.“
The Pentagon spokesman, however, declined to say whether this channel was used when Ukraine’s Zaporozhye nuclear site was attacked overnight, in strikes attributed to Russia.
“If there were to be a situation where we needed to communicate with the Ministry of Defense about a pressing situation, I guess we would use this“, he simply explained, expressing the wish that the Russian army would do the same.
