The US Navy affirmed this Monday, April 10, that its destroyer ship USS Milius conducted a rights and freedoms of navigation mission in the South China sea, “in accordance with international law”.

“At the end of the operation, the USS Milius has left the excessive claim area and continued its operations,” according to a statement from the United States Seventh Fleet, which indicated that the maneuver took place less than twelve nautical miles (about 22 kilometers) from Mischief Reef, located in the Spratly Islands.

The US authorities pointed out that, “under Customary International Law, reflected in the Convention on the Law of the Sea, features such as the Mischief Reef that are submerged at high tide in their natural state have no right to a territorial sea.”

“By conducting commons within twelve nautical miles of Mischief Reef, the United States has demonstrated that ships can lawfully exercise the freedom of the high seas in those areas,” the letter continues.

Earlier, the Taiwanese Air Force Command said that 70 fighter jets and 11 Chinese Army ships were near its air and sea space. According to the Ministry of Defense, 35 of the fighters entered the defense identification area to the southwest of that territory.

China completed military exercises

The Chinese army affirmed on Monday that it had “successfully” completed the military exercises around Taiwan, after three days of maneuvers that included a mock siege of the island, whose sovereignty it claims and has focused disputes on.

“From April 8 to 10, the Army’s Eastern Theater Command completed various war-readiness patrol tasks around the island of Taiwan and the ‘Joint Sword’ exercise, and fully tested the joint combat capability. integration of multiple sectors of the army under combat conditions,” the Eastern Command said.

The ‘eternal’ dispute between China and Taiwan

After the meeting in California between the Taiwanese president, Tsai Ing-wen, and the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Kevin McCarthy, the Xi Jinping government stated that it would respond harshly.

The Asian “giant” waited for Tsai’s return to Taiwan and the end of the visit to China by French President Emmanuel Macron and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to launch the “Joint Sword” operation.

The recent maneuvers are reminiscent of those that took place in August of last year, amid tensions over the trip to the island of Nancy Pelosi, who at that time was still heading the Lower House, the second most authoritative position after President Joe Biden. .

Beijing conducted live-firing exercises about ten kilometers off the Taiwanese coast, in a similar campaign to encircle the island, for about a week. Meanwhile, Russia on this day gave its support to the Xi Jinping administration and said that it had the “sovereign right to react to such provocative actions.”
