Western Australia Grapples With Rising Flu Cases Amidst Low Vaccination Rates
As Winter approaches, Western Australia is facing a concerning increase in influenza cases. The state’s hospitals are already under strain, and health officials are urging residents to take preventative measures. Despite efforts to make flu vaccination accessible, rates remain worryingly low, especially among young children and seniors.
Health Minister Urges Action Amidst Hospital Strain
Amidst growing concerns about hospital ramping and increasing patient numbers,Health Minister Meredith Hammat emphasizes that the flu season is a nationwide challenge. She highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing the issue and stressed the importance of individual duty in curbing the spread of influenza.
“The United States just experienced its worst flu season in 16 years and we’ve used that information to prepare for the additional demand this winter will likely bring to WA,” Ms Hammat said.
She urged all Western Australians to get their free flu vaccination to protect themselves and their loved ones, leveraging insights from severe flu seasons observed in the United Kingdom and the United States.
premier Cook Leads By Example
Echoing the Health Minister’s call, Premier Roger Cook publicly received his flu shot at a local pharmacy. A photo of the premier getting vaccinated was promptly shared on social media, reminding residents that free vaccinations are available only until the end of the month.

A Mother’s Heartbreaking Warning
The stark reality of influenza’s impact was brought into sharp focus by Hannah Elsey, a mother from the U.K.. She shared a harrowing photo of her two-year-old son connected to a ventilator after contracting the flu. Despite being a healthy child with no pre-existing conditions, he became severely ill shortly before a scheduled vaccination appointment.
“Luckily he survived and has made a full recovery, but I don’t think I will ever fully recover from the trauma,” she said.
Elsey’s post serves as a stark reminder of the potential severity of influenza, even in young, healthy individuals.

Grim Statistics From Overseas
Data from the U.K. Health Security Agency reveals a concerning trend: Influenza-related mortality increased by 53% in the 2024-2025 winter, with approximately 7,800 deaths. Tragically, eight of those deaths were children aged four and under.
Local Advocates Share Personal Tragedies
Vaccine advocate Catherine Hughes, known for her advocacy after the loss of her son, shared a poignant experience. She recounted meeting a mother who recently lost her young daughter to influenza, underscoring the devastating impact the virus can have, even before the official start of winter.
“Today was hard,” she posted on Light for riley, the Facebook page set up in her son’s name.
“I met with a beautiful mum who, just a couple of weeks ago, unexpectedly lost her young daughter to influenza.
“Before winter even began. Her gorgeous girl is just… gone. Please, if you can protect your kids… do it!”
Western Australia’s Lagging Vaccination Rates
Unluckily, Western Australia’s flu vaccination rates are the lowest in the nation. Only 12.3% of children aged 0-4 have been vaccinated, placing the state at the bottom of the list alongside South Australia. Even among seniors, only 50% have received their flu shots.
