Washington approves the Himars missile deal to Poland worth 10 billion

The United States announced the approval of the sale of 18 HIMARS precision missile launchers, worth $10 billion, ammunition and other equipment to Poland, a NATO member bordering Ukraine.

“The proposed sale will advance Poland’s military goals of modernizing the capability while further enhancing interoperability with the United States and other allies,” the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement.

She added, “Poland intends to use these defense equipment and devices to modernize its armed forces and expand its ability to strengthen its defense of its lands and deter regional threats.”

HIMARS launchers play a major role in the Ukraine war, as they allow Kyiv forces to carry out precision strikes on supply depots and other Russian sites.

The announcement of the sale of the missile launchers to Poland, which shares a long border with Ukraine, comes nearly a year following the start of Russian military operations.

The State Department approved the potential sale, and the Defense Security Cooperation Agency on Tuesday provided the required notification to Congress, which will consider approving the sale.
