The State Department said that the issue of elections requires study, and the decision must be made by the Ukrainian people
The United States has said it wants to see presidential elections held in Ukraine, but understands that holding a vote during a war is very difficult.
The term of office of President Vladimir Zelensky expires on May 20. In this regard, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller was asked whether Zelensky would be considered the legitimate president of Ukraine after this date.
“We would like to see the presidential election and all other elections in Ukraine,” Miller said. “But we recognize that conducting them in the middle of a war is not an easy task.”
According to Miller, this issue is not unique to Ukraine.
“This issue concerns any country that is at war. Especially when questions arise not only about how soldiers on the front line will vote, but also about what to do with the occupied Ukrainian territories, where the Russian military will prevent Ukrainian citizens from having their say in the elections,” he said.
“So this is a very difficult issue that requires study, and ultimately the decision must be made by the Ukrainian people,” Miller concluded.
