A water skier had an accident on the Danube near the border town of Esternberg (Schärding district) early on Sunday afternoon and has been missing ever since. According to a report by the ORF, the man is said to have been seriously injured when getting on his boat and then no longer managed to stay afloat. Six fire brigades, including four from Austria, searched for the man for hours. Now the search has been stopped.

When trying to climb onto his boat, the athlete may have slipped and got caught in the propeller, which severed his leg. Seriously injured, he then apparently went under in the river. The fire brigade’s search operation is concentrated on the area between the German town of Erlau and the Austrian border town of Esternberg.

Shipping around the scene of the accident had been suspended for the time being. The search was then stopped on Sunday evening, as the ORF reported: The police no longer expect to find the man alive.
