Wayanad Tiger Population on the Rise: Impact on Human-Wildlife Conflict

Wayanad: The tiger conservation authority said that the number of tigers in the Wayanad region has increased by 50 percent in the last ten years. Estimates suggest that at least 120 tigers are now in the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Ten years ago there were only 77 tigers.

The forest department says that the reason for the increase in attacks is the increase in the number of tigers. Tiger attacks are increasing after 2012.

In 2012, there were two tiger attacks in the district. One of them was shot dead. In 2015, three people were killed after being attacked by a tiger.

Another challenge is that Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is surrounded by densely populated areas. Tigers come into populated areas for food and water. As the number increases, so do the attacks between them. Injured tigers have an increased tendency to attack humans and pets.

On December 9, a tiger attacked and killed a farmer who went to graze in the field in Kudallur, Wayanad. Then the forest department issued an order allowing killing of tigers if they are cannibals.
