WCU Men’s Golf Returns Home 13th at Border Olympics

Laredo, Texas – Western Carolina fifth-year senior Magnus Pedersen paced the Catamounts in the spring-opening Border Olympics, carding a final-round score of 2-over par 74 to cap the three-round event with at 3-under par 213. WCU finished 13th overall with a 54-hole score of 874.

Pedersen carded one birdie against three bogeys over the final 18 holes on Tuesday, finishing the event with 10 birdies and an eagle. He was flanked by redshirt senior Pablo Hernandez who climbed 13 spots in the final standings with his best round of the tournament. A product of Madrid, Spain, Hernandez countered a trio of bogeys with two birdies for his 1-over par round of 73, shooting 6-over par 222 for the tournament.

Catamount freshman Jace Butcher and sophomore transfer Ivan Ninkovic placed in a tie for 59th overall as Ninkovic carded WCU’s best final round with his best of the tournament at 1-under par 71. The Croatian-born striker charted a trio of birdies for the second-straight round, finishing the week at 223 and climbing 22 spots over the final 18 holes. Butcher tallied his fifth birdie of the tournament as part of a final-round score of 4-over par 76.

Rounding out WCU’s scoring five was freshman Andrew Korytoski in a tie for 70th overall, shooting 79 in the final round for a two-day score of 8-over par 224.

Paced by the top two individual finishers, Illinois State cruised to the team championship at this year’s Border Olympics by 16 strokes over a three-way tie for the runner-up spot, shared by Lipscomb, North Texas, and Rice. The Redbirds paced the field with a three-round score of 832 followed by the trio tied at 848. Fifth was shared in another three-way tie as the host Houston Cougars, Michigan, and Sam Houston finished the 54-hole event deadlocked at 852.

Second-round leader Valentin Peugnet of Illinois State edged his teammate Alex McCulla by five strokes, 199-to-204, to claim this year’s individual medalist honors.

Western Carolina men’s golf returns to action March 7-9, hosting the Peoples Golf Championship at Sea Palms Resort. It’s the fourth consecutive year the Catamounts have hosted the highly-anticipated tournament in St. Simons Island, Ga., with this year’s installment presented by Peoples Golf which was founded in 2008 by WCU alum Will Peoples.
