While the CGT Cheminots has launched a strike call for this Wednesday, November 8, annual negotiations around salary demands must soon start at the SNCF. For the general secretary of the CFDT railway workers Thomas Cavel, “it is logical that there is a fair redistribution among those who carry out railway production”.

Obviously, SNCF management and unions do not use the same calculators. Railway workers received an average increase of 6% last year and obtained several measures, such as a fuel bonus of 150 euros. But for the CGT railway workers, the increases were only 2 to 3% depending on salary levels. And even if the strike called by the majority union will have only a minimal impact today, it sets the tone for these negotiations where expectations will be very high, confirms Tomas Kaberle, general secretary of the CFDT railway workers.

“Logic that there is a redistribution”

“Negotiation in which we have a lot of demands because the economic context is extremely difficult. And then also, because the SNCF is a company which, this is a very good thing, is doing well, and if it is doing well, it is thanks to its employees. So, it is logical that there is a fair redistribution among those who produce railways.”

13th month, bonuses for night work, the subjects will be numerous and the management of the company will have to find the right balance between a historic net profit announced last spring of 2.4 billion euros and the impact of strikes linked to pension reform, estimated at several hundred million euros.
