During Gamescom 2023, we were invited to try the Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown demo. Accompanied by five members of the team, many points were raised, which we will talk about immediately.
Solar Crown is an event confronting two clans, the Sharps and the Streets. The former have a taste for refinement and classic elegance, while the latter are driven by a much more extravagant and underground street culture. Our choice is quick, it doesn’t matter if we ride in sneakers, as long as we cross the finish line first.
We start the session in our room at the Solar Hotel, fully customizable according to a member of the team, to access the lobby. We then discover the avatars of our future opponents of the moment. Many players can meet here, although a “bubble” allows only twelve to be seen at the same time. We win our car, a magnificent Lamborghini Huracan, reproduced with impressive fidelity, before joining our first race. For information, more than thirty manufacturers have worked in close collaboration with the KT Racing studio to reproduce the hundred vehicles present at the launch with extreme fidelity, whether aesthetically or in terms of road behavior, and it shows!
Following the first race, we are invited to obtain a new vehicle. Direction one of the many concessions to buy the sublime Koenigsegg Agera R, and it is at this moment that we feel the work of the team. The road behavior is totally different from the Lambo. And even more when we take small dirt roads. Speaking of roads, the island of Hong Kong, reproduced on a 1/1 scale, offers us no less than six hundred kilometers of bitumen over eighty square kilometres. Enough to have fun for long hours while marveling at the scenery that surrounds us, thanks to the optimization of the WRC graphics engine.
Racing isn’t just the main point in TDU Solar Crown, because social life is just as important. Indeed, we must participate in races in order to increase our reputation, both for the clan and for the progression within it. Competing and winning against other competitors from the opposing clan will propel us into the highest realms of notoriety, on a three-month seasonal ranking.
Finally, we learned that a dynamic weather would be present, with a daily cycle of forty-eight minutes, and this, for the same server. The little extra is that the radios are all synchronized between the players. Would a singing competition be possible between friends? The rain is likely to fall frequently…
Unfortunately, we cannot give you the exact release date. Despite kneeling in front of the team members, begging them, we only got a simple “sometime in 2024” as an answer, on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC. Strongly the possibility of traversing the roads of the island of Hong-Kong!
