Faced last year with serious concerns about our energy supplies, particularly because of the war in Ukraine, the government highlighted the principle of sobriety. Among the measures presented: not heating your interior to more than 19°C, a limit actually included in the Energy Code since 1978. The government wanted to “make it known and apply it”, both by companies than by individuals.
During a recent conference, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, the Minister of Ecological Transition, made new recommendations to the French for the coming winter. She stressed the need to make this sobriety a “habit” for everyone, particularly through heating. Do our readers apply this rule at home? We asked them the question.
“I won’t put the heating on because my budget doesn’t allow it”
Despite the price shield put in place by the government, the prices of gas and electricity have continued to rise in recent months. And this is what pushes some of the people who responded to our call for witnesses to respect a temperature of 19°C in their homes. “I have to heat my house to 19°C, not to limit the ecological impact, but for an obvious reason: my bill,” explains Nicole. Tony makes the same observation. “I will not put on heating this winter, we will cover ourselves with plaids, blankets with my son… Last year, I heated with electricity and I felt a sharp increase in my bill at the end of the year. month, says this father of a 6-year-old boy. This winter, I don’t want to consume more, because my budget simply doesn’t allow it.”
Coralie deplores the fact that the cost of energy “devours” her budget. “I don’t know if I could manage to heat myself decently, if I could even reach 19°C,” she worries.
“These efforts for the planet are very important”
Others have not forgotten the climate issue. This is the case of Mona and Isabelle, both mothers. “The habit is established: 19°C in the main rooms, 17°C in the bedrooms,” says Mona. It’s important to make an effort, so we will continue.”
As for Isabelle, she even plans to lower her heating to 18°C to protect the planet. “For us, it’s full of small gestures all year round, not just in winter. It’s normal for everyone to do their part.” “Plus, we sleep better,” adds Hervé.
“Let the State set an example, then we’ll see”
There remain some who are determined to heat their homes as they wish. “It is not up to the State to tell me how much heating or air conditioning I have to do,” believes Bertrand, “I am not going to put on a sweater and gloves to watch television in my living room,” he protests. Michelle respected 19°C last year. But this year, there is no question of making concessions. “We played the sacrifice game once and we reaped a 30% increase after the winter. I won’t be fooled anymore and I will do as I want,” she confides.
The final word goes to Luc, who puts things into perspective: “a century ago, we heated ourselves with candles and stoves while houses were damp and not insulated. So at these temperatures, we should survive with duvets.”
