Nearly 3,000 festival-goers were present for the first evening of Welcome in Tziganie. This Saturday, they are back and the public is won over even in the rain.

The festival kicked off with great fanfare this Friday, April 28. Nearly 3,000 festival-goers were present in Seissan for this 16th edition of Welcome in Tziganie. At 8 p.m., the queue to enter the site stretched for many meters. Impatient, lovers of Balkan folklore whistle, sing and dance to the tunes of their favorite bands. Not far from there, makeshift camps are set up. Yann, Arnaud and their group of friends have set up their tent in the parking lot of the nearby shopping center. “We are coming from Albi for the evening, with this good weather we are going to have a good time,” Yann quips. The party is here to stay. A few minutes later, we find them inside the festival.

The atmosphere is in full swing, the first notes resound. Monika Lakatos & The Gipsy voices has conquered the public who want more. It will be served with Karandila Orkestar and Ivo Papasov. The crowd dances frantically and she realizes that she didn’t come for nothing.

Spaniards, Germans or English, several nationalities were represented among the festival-goers. The road was long but the effort was worth it. “I didn’t expect that, it’s really huge,” says a young festival-goer who is waiting for her turn at the refreshment bar. The organization is satisfied, the bet is won again.

David is a regular at the festival, originally from Béarn, he experienced the very beginnings of the event, about ten years ago. “It was a friend who introduced me to the festival, we met the brass band who told us that it was a great event and since then we have been coming back every year”, he confides. Experiences that even pushed him to join a Balkan music group.

Between each concert, a fanfare ignited the festival.

While the first evening was almost sold out, on Saturday the few drops of rain did not prevent fans of Soviet Suprem, Ionica Minune or Energy Band from returning. Because despite the threatening weather, a rain of artists, some of whom were present for their only French date, flooded the Seissan music scene. Once again, the audience is won over. And the sequins were out for the most part.

With family, friends or colleagues, “Tziganie” welcomes a heterogeneous audience from all walks of life. Amateurs, curious or unconditional fans of gypsy sounds mixing pop, rock or even reggae, even the most reluctant or shy could not help but engage in the pit.

And there’s no time to get bored on site, before concerts or between each change of scene. The park of the green theater is invested by the Off festival which proposes many animations: concerts, restitutions, spectacle young public, tent of cinema etc. Cartomancy, tattoo-shop and craft stands did not fail to attract the greatest number of people seduced by these initiatives.

Stay in the Gers or move? To travel, it was enough to walk through the aisles of the festival. To eat and drink, there is no need to pay for a plane ticket since you could go to one of the many food-trucks or restaurants offering specialties from the Balkans.
