A West Virginia police officer was fatally shot Friday while a 29-year-old man was indicted for fatally shooting the officer.the authorities reported.

Police responded to a report of a shooting in Mingo County, West Virginia, when they found a man identified as Timothy Kennedy, who began shooting at police.

Moments later, officers said they were met with gunshots when they responded to a report of a shooting, in which one of the officers, who was identified as Cory Maynard, was fatally shot.

“I am absolutely heartbroken tonight to report that West Virginia State Police Sergeant Cory Maynard was fatally injured in an incident this afternoon near Matewan,” West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, Republican, said.

“The brave men and women of law enforcement, and all the first responders who put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe, are an inspiration to all of us.”added Justice in a statement.

Meanwhile, Governor Justice’s office ordered all US and West Virginia flags to be flown at half mast to honor the soldier.

Graduation ceremonies at Mingo Central High School were delayed due to the search for Kenndywhile emergency workers asked residents to stay in the area at home while the search was carried out.

The West Virginia governor said that several law enforcement agencies joined the search in the Beech Creek area, until they finally found Kennedy’s arrest.
