The Westhoek has been flooded for a week due to heavy rainfall. Houses were notably evacuated in Woumen (Diksmuide) and Merkem (Houthulst).

Thanks to drier weather, the water level is gradually dropping on Friday but many roads remain flooded and blocked.

“As the weekend approaches, we would like to once once more remind you that it is still strongly recommended not to travel to the Westhoek,” reports the area’s firefighters.
