Kuwaiti artist Saleh Al-Dara said that the artistic community in Kuwait has been suffering from what he called “trivial works” for 15 years, stressing at the same time, “there are reservations by the Kuwaiti Ministry of Information about the roles of temptation and red lines.”

In an interview with Erm News, he added: “But on digital platforms, there is no censorship or control over the presentation of bold actions and red lines,” according to him.

He explained: “With regard to trivial works, we suffer from them, and the audience has no fault. Producers produce generously in topics that are not important, and artists must continuously develop their performance by taking artistic courses to increase their artistic weight, to compete with stars with expertise.”

He stressed that “Gulf drama has witnessed a remarkable development in the past few years, following the emergence of digital platforms that show short dramas and are attracting young and young generations.”

The Kuwaiti artist explained that “with the advent of digital platforms, the young producer began to express himself in the way he preferred, without restrictions and without pressure, which was reflected in the recent dramas.”

He pointed out that “if a questionnaire is conducted, it will become clear that the recent works have overcome the old works during the past years, and that the role of Gulf drama, today, has become more important and more influential than before.”

Al-Daraa talked about censorship in Kuwait, saying: “There is censorship of artworks in Kuwait, in drama and cinema, and in the past, the restrictions of censorship were more than their restrictions at the present time.”

He pointed out that “the role of censorship is very important in controlling work standards and controlling caveats,” pointing out that “censorship, if applied objectively, will be effective, and if applied in a mood that destroys art.”

Al-Dara’ touched on Kuwaiti cinema, saying: “The cinematic works in Kuwait are very few, and they are unofficial youthful attempts, as the cinema in Kuwait lacks support from one side, such as a cinema apparatus or management.”

Al-Daraa stressed the need to support young people and give them confidence because of this role in creating Gulf drama and cinema that can compete and spread in the Arab world.

Saleh Al-Dara’ is a Kuwaiti actor and director. He studied acting and theater directing, and obtained a bachelor’s degree from the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Kuwait.
