As cited by automotive industry analyst Jato Dynamics, new car registrations increased 20% year-on-year in August with demand led by growing demand for electric vehicles.

Some 900,000 units were sold in 28 European markets, and 22% of that total, or 196,000 units, consisted of battery electric models. In total, electric vehicle registrations increased by 102%.

However, gasoline cars remain the most sought after in Europe: 53% of all registrations are gasoline models.

Registrations of BEV models increased in Belgium (+224%), Greece (+183%) and Luxembourg (+164%). Demand in Germany alone, which increased by 171%, represented 44% of total electric vehicle registrations in Europe in August.

Jato says demand for electric models has remained strong due to more affordable prices and government support.

“Although current industry discussions often point towards a slowdown in BEV growth, our data shows that demand growth remains strong, due to their increasingly competitive prices and continued support from governments. all of Europe,” said Felipe Muñoz, global analyst at Jato.

During the month of August, Tesla secured first place in registrations. The Tesla Model Y sold 21,549 units, which represents a year-on-year increase of 208%. The Model Y is also the best-selling car so far this year on the continent, with 169,420 units sold.

“The Model Y is likely to become Europe’s most popular new passenger vehicle by the end of the year. As the leading non-European model in Europe, it will be a historic and notable moment,” said Muñoz. Meanwhile, the smaller Tesla Model 3 sold 11,943 times, a 307% year-over-year increase.

Tesla’s sales surge comes after the US company cut prices for its Model Y SUV and Model 3 sedan. In the UK, Tesla cut prices for the Model Y in January this year, while the Model 3 price reduced by up to £6,500.

The discounts were introduced to stimulate sales after the company’s supply dramatically exceeded demand by 34,000 units in the last quarter of 2022.

With the Model Y leading the list for the month of August, the top five was completed by the Pegueot 208 (21,549), the Volkswagen T-Roc (15,198), the Fiat 500 (14,469), the Dacia Sandero (14,428).
