It is not news to anyone that Apple takes security seriously in every product, service and software it releases.
One of the resources aimed precisely at this is the FileVaultpresent on Macs since the early days of Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther), in 2003. But what exactly is that and how does it work?

What is FileVault?
The feature is nothing more than the encryption system of all your information stored on Mac. This process is carried out on the startup disk, so that other users cannot access your personal information — in the event of theft, for example.
Apple reminds you that this encryption cannot be done on highly partitioned disk configurations (such as RAID arrays).
Use: if you have a Mac with the T2 security chip, the data on the disk is automatically encrypted already. However, enabling FileVault provides additional protection as it requires the login password to decrypt data.
Setting up FileVault itself requires a admin user of macOS, that is, the one that has access to the entire system.
By enabling it, it is possible to unlock the boot disk using your iCloud account and password (ideal for anyone using or planning to use Apple’s cloud storage service) or Extra key (In this case, it is imperative that you keep the combination of letters and numbers in a safe place, otherwise the files and settings cannot be recovered).
How do I know if FileVault is enabled on my Mac?
To check this, open System Settings, click on the “Privacy and Security” tab and identify the section dedicated to FileVault. If it is not activated, click on “Activate” and enter the password used to unlock the computer.
Then choose how you want to unlock the disk and reset the password if you forget it. Then select “Continue”.
Remember, if you share your Mac with other people, their information will also be properly encrypted. That way, other users unlock the encrypted disk using the macOS login password.
