WhatsApp tests screen sharing during calls

O WhatsApp started testing a new option that lets you share your iPhone screen during a video call. Noticed by staff WABetaInfothe feature was discovered in the latest beta version of the messenger (for iOS) on TestFlight (23.12.0.74).

As you can see in the image below, when entering a new video call, it is now possible to find a new icon at the bottom of the screen between the buttons to change the camera and the one to turn off the video. Upon tapping it, the user is greeted with the standard iOS screen recording interface, with the option to initiate sharing.

When screen sharing is enabled, all content on the user’s screen is displayed in the recording, including notifications. So if you don’t want to run the risk of some unexpected notification popping up while you’re showing something to someone, it’s best to enable the feature. Do not disturb before starting the transmission.

Once started, sharing can be stopped at any time by the user. WhatsApp even asks for permission to record your screen the first time you try to use the feature.

Only available to some WhatsApp beta users, the novelty should reach even more testers in the coming weeks. It remains to be seen when it will be released to the general public, however.
