When and how will the Sun die and destroy the Earth?

When it dies, a star, depending on its mass, can become either a white dwarf, a neutron star (after exploding as a supernova), or a black hole.

The more massive a star is, the faster it consumes its nuclear fuel by fusing hydrogen into helium. Its lifespan is therefore shorter and it evolves more quickly towards a white dwarf“, explains Klaus Werner, leader of the study team and professor at the University of Tübingen, in a communiqué.

In 5 billion years (so we will probably no longer be here), our star will have used all the helium allowing it to create its energy thanks to internal nuclear fusion and which makes it burn so hot that it heats us and illuminates us on Earth. Unfortunately, once the helium runs out, the Sun will transform into a red giant, it will swell and expand, engulfing nearby planets, including Earth. The more it swells, the colder it will be. Its core will be nothing more than a white dwarf that will be roughly the size of Earth.
