For the Metro, the experience with the mobility network goes beyond a tour of a station. Alejandro Giraldo is a young man who studies engineering and was part of Amigos Metro, a program that strengthened his leadership and training skills, to apply in his neighborhood.
There are invitations that change from day to day, and this was one for Alejandro Giraldo, an Industrial Engineering student at the University of Antioquia who has been working for Nuevo Horizonte for several years, a neighborhood that is part of Comuna 1, a place that is related to with the K line of the Subway.

She says that this path began in 2016, the year in which she arrived at the headquarters of the Community Action of the neighborhood, to be part of the social service that she was asked for in her studies. The theme, more than a requirement, became a familiar situation, a kind of arrival in a familiar place. Over the months she discovered that she liked to work for the people, the streets, the places. Also, meet other people and unite wills, desires. Later, and through this place, came the invitation to participate in Subway Friendsa program of which he was part between March 2022 and August of that year.

He thanks this initiative for the knowledge it offered him on topics such as leadership and strengthening himself, to work for his neighborhood: “Subway Friends It gave me elements to impact the community and work as a team.”
After finishing these sessions, he felt more capable of working for a transformation of current problems. And even to influence the lives of other people who look to him to ask for help or feel heard.
The power to serve the community
Nuevo Horizonte is a neighborhood that is close to Cerro Santo Domingo, a place where new and old families have arrived. Due to its conditions, it is not a safe space due to the lack of solid and functional infrastructure. Added to this issue is the increase in youth suicide, inadequate waste management, the presence of debris, and the possibility of fires among makeshift homes.

In addition to the contribution that the Mayor’s Office and the Medellin Subway have done to the neighborhood, he considers the contribution of all the people, the union as a community, vital. He expects nothing in return; he feels the pleasure of serving and being able to help others, and the joy that people’s gratitude gives him: “Sometimes it is a simple issue such as a simple procedure, and on other occasions it may be psychological or emotional issues that are not so easily solved. From the Acción Comunal board, we can make changes and get people to see the work of social organizations like this one.”

He has almost a year of studies left, before finishing his career as an Industrial Engineer. When that happens, he says that he will feel stronger, to follow that call to work in his neighborhood, that place where he lives with his mother and his grandmother.

He Metro Friends Program recognizes and promotes the value that each person has in their environment. It also invites you to work together with others, to improve, maintain and better understand everything that exists or can be. For this reason, it is an initiative that is aimed at children, youth and adults, and that reaches different neighborhoods. Through experiences in art, culture, sports and science, people can reflect on life and strengthen their talents, so that this journey that is life is enjoyable and meaningful.
