When renovation rhymes with destruction of biodiversity: ‘Today, cohabitation with birds and bats is in danger’

Insulate, renovate, build: faced with the economic and climate crisis, more and more Belgians, helped by bonuses and incentives from the public authorities, are thinking about doing work in their homes. But did you know that certain renovations can have a real impact on a whole series of animal species present in our homes?

The non-profit organization Natagora is trying to raise awareness of the issue, Alain Paquet is in charge of the study: “Che problem of restoring houses, insulation or even new construction is unfavorable to biodiversity. We see this with the species that are linked to the human habitat, that live in our houses, in our walls. This is the case in bats, pipistrelle in particular, but also in several birds such as the black swift or the house sparrow. In birds, for example, it is one of the most declining groups.

We have lived for thousands of years, in cohabitation with all these animals and today this cohabitation is in danger. Honestly, it’s time. We can react“, adds Alain Paquet.
