The Chinese envied the beauty of Santorini and wanted to make a miniature of it in Yunnan province.
It is about one mountain settlement called “Dali’s Ideal State”. Built on the side of the Cangshan mountain range, this resort overlooks the lake. Consists of tourist inns, boutique hotels, businesses, apartments and small winding streets adorned with flowers and plants.
It covers an area of 3700 acres, a total investment of 8 billion yuan. Based in Santorini, but it is far from the original. However, it has white buildings, blue domes, alleys and a panoramic view of the water.
It has become the focus and destination for many factors influencing social media in Chinaas well as for those looking for iconic wedding photos.
For the Chinese it is the aspirational high-end tourist destination, appealing to a population that cannot travel abroad but can afford an “international experience”.
As those in the know argue, the Chinese will never copy a place unless they truly admire and respect it.
