On Wednesday, a second suspect was arrested in connection with the death of Claudia Van Der Stichelen. As a reminder, the 58-year-old lawyer was shot and killed at her home in Hautem-Saint-Liévin (East Flanders) on October 28, 2023. The circumstances of this assassination still remain very unclear today.
When questioned, the man called Etienne DL explained that it was not him. “I was at home, I was sleeping,” he said, denying everything outright while giving a sample of his DNA. To Het Laatste Nieuws, the suspect’s family also affirmed that it was impossible for it to be Etienne EL for physical reasons. The man would be in bad shape and unable to hold a weapon according to her.

The question is why the man was pursued by investigators? According to our colleagues from Het Laatste Nieuws, there are four reasons for this.
The first is obvious: he was a client of the lawyer. Ms. Van Der Stichelen’s mission was to manage the suspect’s expenses. Which ties in with the second reason since on Facebook, Etienne had expressed his dissatisfaction. “I seek advice and help, I am treated like a criminal. What to do against a lawyer? I am helpless,” he wrote on the social network on October 11.
The third element is even more disturbing. The man spent time in a residential treatment center to battle his alcohol problems. When he was brought home, nurses came regularly to provide care. During one of his visits, a nurse noticed that there was a weapon in his home. She was also reportedly found at her home during the search on Wednesday. Finally, the man was covered in scratches. All these elements obviously do not mean that he is guilty. But he will have to justify to the investigators all these elements which seem disturbing.
