Hansi Flick is no longer national coach. Who could be his successor in the German national team? There are several options.

Update from September 10th, 5:06 p.m.: Now it is actually fixed: Hansi Flick is no longer national coach, the DFB has given the 58-year-old a leave of absence.

First report from September 10th, 7:39 a.m.: Wolfsburg – Are Hansi Flick’s days as national coach of the German national soccer team numbered? The 1:4 debacle of his DFB team against Japan showed once again that something is wrong with the German selection. Major defensive blunders, hardly any penetration in the forward game, general helplessness. What’s next now, nine months before the 2024 European Championship in your own country?

TV expert Lothar Matthäus, who has been friends with Flick for decades, doubted the national coach’s future immediately after the bankruptcy. The question is: who could inherit him? We present five names that are currently being traded as possible Flick successors.

Flick’s successor as national coach? Candidate Julian Nagelsmann (36, still under contract with FC Bayern)

Julian Nagelsmann was placed on leave from FC Bayern Munich in March. However, his contract there runs until 2026 DFB would have to come to an agreement with the German record champions. But it is questionable whether Nagelsmann will now decide on a national team.

“I believe that at 36 years old he is not yet at the point where he would rather want and need daily work with a team,” said record national player Lothar Matthäus. Nagelsmann was most recently linked to Borussia Dortmund.

Flick’s successor as national coach? Candidate Jürgen Klopp (56, Liverpool FC, contract until 2026)

Jürgen Klopp would be the fans’ and probably those in charge’s dream coach. “He’s the only one I see who can pull something off,” said 2014 world champion Lukas Podolski.

But it is unrealistic that Klopp will quit Liverpool prematurely. His contract with the Reds runs until 2026. The former coach of Mainz 05 and Borussia Dortmund repeatedly emphasized that he could imagine being a national coach – but only if the timing was right. It doesn’t look like that at the moment. After a totally messed up season last year, the Reds got off to a good start in the Premier League.

Flick’s successor as national coach? Candidate Oliver Glasner (49, without a club)

When Hansi Flick quit FC Bayern, Oliver Glasner allegedly found out about it very early on. On the eve of the duel at VfL Wolfsburg, the current national coach is said to have told his colleague that he would announce his departure the next day. The Austrian Glasner is considered an excellent specialist; he won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt and was previously successful with Wolfsburg.

Curiosity: If Germany plays against Austria in Vienna in November, Germany could have an Austrian coach and vice versa (Ralf Rangnick).

Flick’s successor as national coach? Candidate Rudi Völler (63, DFB sports director)

The 1990 world champion stepped in after the embarrassment at the 2000 European Championships and two years later led the DFB team as team boss into the World Cup final against Brazil (0-2).

After the World Cup debacle last winter, the fan favorite was assigned to Hansi Flick as sports director – without success. So far, Völler has vehemently defended the national coach. But after the embarrassment against Japan, he avoided a declaration of loyalty.

Flick’s successor as national coach? Candidate Stefan Kuntz (60, national coach Türkiye)

The 1996 European champion is reportedly facing dismissal as national coach in Turkey; the recent 1-1 draw against Armenia could have been one weak result too many for him. Kuntz is a popular figure with the association’s internal knowledge, which is classically called stable smell.

Not just through his 25 international matches: as a coach, he led the U21s to two European Championship titles and demonstrated an outstanding knack for the best German talents. In 2021, he was also responsible for the German Olympic team in Tokyo, which was eliminated early. For Thomas Helmer, Kuntz is a hot candidate as Flick’s successor, as he recently emphasized.
