In 1960, Hollywood actors and screenwriters – cheated by the rise of television – went on strike to demand better working conditions. After several months of social movement, they obtained a fairer remuneration by means of residual rights.

Sixty-three years later, a somewhat similar scenario is unfolding in Hollywood – this time against a backdrop of the rise of streaming platforms. On July 14, the American actors – represented by the SAG-AFTRA union – officially joined the strike started on May 2, 2023 by the screenwriters – represented by the WAG union.

This large-scale mobilization is already threatening the release of many programs currently in production. It could also lead to the postponement of the Emmy Awards ceremony (which rewards the best of American television each year).
