Regarding the pros and cons produced by a film can never be generalized and sometimes it invites public attention. As happened with Fast X, which is said to have generated up to USD 704 million or IDR 10.7 trillion through global screenings, it turns out that Universal Pictures is still said to have only made a small profit.

Even though the film became one of the best-selling films this year and is also included in the list of the most revenue from Vin Diesel’s franchise (the best-selling film is still held by Furious 7, which was released in 2015). Fast X sits on the 4th position of grossing film in 2023 so far.

Reporting from Variety, it was stated that Fast X only had a small margin on the profits generated by them and disappointed the studio because they were unable to get the results they targeted. Moreover, the production costs they incur are quite large, namely USD 340 million or IDR 5.1 trillion.

It turns out that this phenomenon doesn’t only happen to Fast X, there are several other big IPs that also suffer a similar fate or even worse. Several films with large production costs, such as Mission: Impossible-Dead Reckoning Part One, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny to The Flash, also experienced income that was not on target.

Even Indiana and Mission: Impossible made their studios suffer losses because they failed to cover their production costs.

Fast X itself is in a better position because it competes with The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Guardian of the Galaxy Vol.3 and also Barbie, who continues to add to her income coffers. Unfortunately, the small profit margin achieved has made the studio even more hesitant to continue the final two titles of the franchise.

Attention is also attached to Fast X and Barbie with the achievements and profit margins achieved. Of course, they prefer to produce films like Barbie, which only costs USD 145 million or around IDR 2.2 trillion to produce and is capable of producing more than USD 1 billion in just a short amount of time.

This also raises concerns that the phenomenon that has befallen Fast X and several other big franchises will make some production houses afraid to ‘gamble’ on films with big budgets or continue the franchise.
