Have you ever had to replace your iPhone charging cable? You are not the only one ! iPhone cables are fragile and can be damaged quickly. But why ?
If you’ve ever owned an iPhone, you’ve probably faced a common problem: the fragility of the charging cable. Whether due to handling or fraying, these worries quickly render the cable unusable. This problem is not limited to the iPhone, it affects other Apple products as well.
Two explanations can help us understand why Apple cables tend to deteriorate quickly: design and ecological transition.

One of the major reasons for the fragility of Apple cables lies in the choice of design. Apple attaches great importance to the aesthetics of its products, sometimes to the detriment of their functionality. Apple’s design team deemed the ribbed reinforcements found on previous cables to be unsightly. So they opted for a thinner, seamless plastic sheath, giving the cable a sleek look. Unfortunately, this thinner design resulted in the cables being more fragile.
This design decision, while visually appealing, resulted in constant complaints from users. Indeed, the Apple cables didn’t seem to live up to the brand’s reputation for quality.
Become greener
Another explanation lies in the ecological transition undertaken by Apple in 2007 under the “A Greener Apple” initiative. The goal was to eliminate harmful materials from their products, including PVC, commonly used to reinforce cables, making them more rigid and durable.
The removal of PVC from Apple products has also led to its removal from cables, which have been replaced by thinner, flexible rubber sheaths. This transition was intended to make Apple products more environmentally friendly, but it had a negative impact on the durability of the cables.
Despite these durability issues, Apple is working to address them. The Cupertino company has already launched more robust braided fabric cables for some of its products, such as the HomePod, the iMac or the new MacBooks. Moreover, it is strong that Apple introduces new braided fabric cables with the new line of iPhone 15. They are both more durable and environmentally friendly.
