Why Newsrooms Must Unite for World News Day

Global Newsrooms Rally for September 28

World News Day 2026 is gathering momentum across more than 1,000 news organisations and support agencies in 108 countries.

Branko Brkic, Founder Project Kontinuum, announced that the upcoming September 28 campaign offers a unified response for newsrooms facing mounting hostility. What began in 2018 as a Canadian industry campaign with 17 founding news brands has expanded into a global movement, with participation surging particularly in regions where journalists face direct attacks and require solidarity.

Combating Disinformation Through Collective Action

Public trust in media institutions and people remains woeful. Propaganda, noise and open attacks make the truth more difficult to find and so much easier to ignore.

According to organizers, reporters and editors continue to produce essential journalism not for financial gain, but out of a commitment to the craft despite professional risks. Organizers emphasize that individual newsrooms are vulnerable when operating in isolation, but collective action creates a force. The September 28 initiative aims to leverage the combined reach of global press outlets and the solidarity of working journalists.

Requirements for Participating Newsrooms

World News Day operates as a non-fundraiser coordinated alongside Cherilyn Ireton, Executive Director, World Editors Forum.

Participating outlets are asked to fulfill two specific criteria: show and explain what goes into their best journalism rather than simply asserting its quality, and show that it is part of something bigger.

Toolkit Assets and Complete Editorial Control

Organizers supply a comprehensive campaign kit containing digital banners, two videos, print ads, social cards, as well as cartoons and op-eds from leading media voices.

Participating entities retain full control over how these assets are utilized, whether through committed advertising pages, broadcast slots, social media posts, or published op-eds.

The Cost of Isolation in Modern Media

Major media groups and independent publishers alike are currently scheduling content for the event.

Organizers warn that newsrooms choosing to sit out the campaign risk spending another year defending journalism’s value alone.
