Why Streaming Avatar 2 Illegal Virtually Guarantees You’ll Catch a Virus

A study by NordVPN claimed that watching the latest James Cameron movie on an illegal streaming site generated an average of 1.6 cybersecurity alerts.

If you haven’t had the opportunity to see “Avatar 2: The Waterway” in theaters, don’t catch up on online streaming sites. Indeed, according to a study by NordVPNthe cybersecurity giant, published this Thursday, March 9, taking advantage of James Cameron’s latest blockbuster through illegal channels is particularly risky.

Virus risk

This study, carried out with the aim of highlighting the risks incurred by Internet users on streaming sites, reveals that out of ten sites broadcasting Avatar identified by NordVPN, 16 threats could be identified. Thus, watching the film on one of these links results in an average of 1.6 security risks, including phishing, malicious links or viruses.

“We suggest that moviegoers do not put their data at risk,” said Adrianus Warmenhoven, cybersecurity advisor at NordVPN, in comments relayed by BFM. The latter advises users to be “patient in enjoying these films now safely and legally when it is already possible (on streaming platforms)”.

The study, carried out on the panel of feature films nominated for the 2023 Oscars, specifies that the podium is completed by “The Banshees of Inisherin”, with 1.25 alerts per link and by “Top Gun: Maverick”, which lists 8 threats out of 10 proposed links.
