“Not out of vanity, but in order to better remember the meaning of the event”
A study has found that taking selfies is not for vanity, but to best remember the meaning of an event.
Ohio State University, USA conducted an experimental study with 2100 participants. As a result, first-person point-of-view shooting while looking at a scene such as a person or object is when you want to best convey the physical experience of an event, while third-person point-of-view shooting, including the person being photographed, best remembers the meaning of an event. It turns out that you choose intuitively when you want to. Selfie photos belonging to the third person point of view are taken to keep a specific event deeply in the memory.
“Selfie pictures may seem frivolous at first glance, but they actually serve a deeper psychological purpose,” said study co-author Lisa Libby, a professor of psychology. She added, “The results of the study are quite different from the view that some people take selfies to promote themselves and post them on places like Instagram.”
According to the research team, photos from a third-person perspective do a much better job of portraying the deeper meaning of an event in a person’s life by showing them actively participating in the moment. First-person photography best expresses the physical experience of an event, such as scenery or buildings. For example, a photo of the ocean taken while traveling on the beach captures “the physical experience of that beautiful day,” while a selfie photo taken with a friend captures “time spent with loved ones.”
The results of this study (Picturing Your Life: The Role of Imagery Perspective in Personal Photos) were published in an international journal, Social Psychological and Personality Science.
