“WE MUST ELECT SOMEONE ELSE”

‘We have to elect someone other than Putin and everything will be fine’: In the middle of a broadcast by the Kremlin-controlled NTV channel, a former Russian MP called for a change of government and a replacement for Vladimir Putin, causing discomfort on the set, an extract relayed on social networks.

“With the current political regime, we have no chance to join Europe. We have to elect a different government that will end this story with Ukraine and build a normal relationship with European countries, and everything will return to the normal”, pleaded Boris Nadezhdin, an ex-ally of Boris Nemtsov, a liberal opponent of Vladimir Putin assassinated in 2015. Facing him, a propagandist tried to contradict him while the presenter, pouting, said “s “expect 100%” to this speech, which he considered “boring”.

This is not the first time that Boris Nadezhdin has been openly critical of the war in Ukraine and more broadly of the Russian leader’s choices. He is one of the few dissenting voices to be heard on pro-Kremlin television sets. In September 2022, he had already considered that it was “impossible to beat Ukraine with current methods”, pleading instead to “launch peace talks”.

Asked by of the BBC at the beginning of May, he also said that “war is not deeply rooted in Russian society”, and that the youngest in particular were “more skeptical of the conflict”. As for his own safety, he claimed to have started to criticize Vladimir Putin from the beginning of the century, admitting however to fear “a little” for his own life.
