Completing the Father’s Cinematic Legacy
Justin Hardy was deeply intertwined with the cinematic legacy of his late father, Robin Hardy, who directed the 1973 folk horror classic The Wicker Man starring Christopher Lee and Edward Woodward. That original film followed a police officer sent to a fictional Scottish island to investigate the disappearance of a local girl. Though the original film bombed at the box office before eventually achieving cult status, it cast a long shadow over the family.
In 2024, Justin and his brother Dominic released the documentary Children Of The Wicker Man, which examined the complicated personal legacy of their father’s magnum opus and the family sacrifices made during its creation. Before Robin Hardy died at age 86 in 2016, he expressed a strong desire to complete a Wicker Man trilogy, following up his 2011 release The Wicker Tree with a third installment.

The concluding film of the trilogy stars Game of Thrones actor Francis Magee alongside Norwegian actress Christiane Schaldemose. The story centers on a woman isolated on an island torn between the ghosts of the past and the gods of the present, forcing her to confront dark family secrets lurking in the shadows.
Dominic Hardy praised his brother’s artistic achievements on the production, emphasizing that Justin established himself as a filmmaker in his own right.
“When he showed the final version to me, I said, ‘Now you have made a film with a capital F. It is your film. It is your vision’, and it settles the legacy of our father, who had invented a massive thing of the same name, but Justin made something humanist telling an important story.”

After reading history at Oxford University, he studied film at Bournemouth and scriptwriting at the University of California, Los Angeles. He later shared his expertise by teaching screenwriting at University College London.
