Windows 10, Windows Defender slows down your PC

AV-Comparatives publishes an antivirus test for the period of April 2022. It reveals a significant drop in performance for Microsoft Defender. The tests conducted analyzed the impact of different security solutions on the performance of a Windows 10 21H2 64-bit PC. The latter was equipped with an Intel Core i3 processor, 4 GB of RAM and an SSD.

The tests replicated common operations and activities such as copying files, checking in and out, installing or uninstalling applications, browsing sites, and launching applications. In addition, performance tests with PC Mark 10 Professional have also taken place to assess the impact during real-world use. For each activity a score was assigned with slow, mediocre, fast and very fast. These four evaluations make it possible to position each solution in relation to the other software tested.

The K7 antivirus is the only solution that managed to get the maximum rating. Clearly it is considered very fast in all the activities performed. ESET, G Data and Panda rank behind due to a “fast” and not “very fast” rating in an activity.

Microsoft Defender, a system-intensive antivirus.

AV Comparatives – Impact Score (April 2022). The lower the score, the better the antivirus.

Windows 10’s native antivirus, Microsoft Defender fails to differentiate itself. It is resource-intensive to the point of having a greater impact on PC performance than all other solutions. It ranks second to last, just ahead of Total Defense.

Although the application gets several “very fast” ratings (launch applications, browsing websites and downloading files), it receives poor ratings in file copying, archiving and unarchiving or even when installing apps.

He suddenly finds himself with a final AVC score of 68 against 90 for K7, G DATA and Panda.

The recurring evaluation of this service from Microsoft is important because its market share is dominant. Exact figures are difficult to obtain but we know that it now exceeds 50%. Clearly 5 out of 10 computers use Windows Defender.
