Windows 11: Microsoft starts keeping advertising in the Start menu

With update KB5036980, currently optional but rolling out in the coming weeks to all Windows 11 users, Microsoft has opened the door to advertising in the Start menu. More precisely, these are “recommendations” for software offered in the Microsoft Store.

A nice addition for developers, less so for users

Until now, the Our Recommendations section of the Start menu only displayed the most recently installed programs and files used by the user. But you’ll soon see software you don’t own from Microsoft’s app store. The goal is, not surprisingly, to generate installs and thus encourage developers to offer their applications on the Redmond company’s solution.

Microsoft specifies that the applications displayed come from a “small selection of hand-picked developers“. It seems that the company does not want to keep up, because testing around this add-on only started two weeks ago in the beta channel. Usually it takes several months before you see a test succeed or not. Previously, ads were added in the Windows 11 file explorer had also been abandoned.

The good news is that, fortunately, it is possible to disable these recommendations/ads. Before :

  1. Go to Windows 11 settings (from the gear in the Start menu for example).
  2. Here, it is the personalization menu on the left that interests you.
  3. In it, click on the Start section
  4. Finally, uncheck Show recommendations for tips, shortcuts, new apps, etc.
