You may be wondering what type of heater you should use for winter. Here are some tips and information.

What is the most economical type of heating?

The estimate made for the month of November 2023 by “Wikipower” explains that firewood is the cheapest energy, and has been for many months: to heat itself a household will pay around €1,476

Next comes natural gas at €2,004, €2,008 for pellets, €2,082 for fuel oil, and finally the most expensive: €7,482 for electricity.

Prices are down compared to last year

Between November 2022 and November 2023, the electric heating bill fell from €12,016 in 2022 to €7,482 in 2023: this is a significant reduction of more than 38%.

Likewise, the natural gas bill fell by more than 42%, falling from €3,477 in 2022 to €2,004 in 2023! But other energy sources have also fallen, the price of pellets for example: the bill amounted to €2,008 per year in November 2023 and, in November 2022, it was €3,188. In one year, the price of pellets has therefore fallen by 37%.

Heating with pellets is today more expensive than natural gas, but less expensive than oil. In November 2023, the oil heating bill is around €2,082 per year. This represents a drop of 18% compared to a year earlier (€2,547).

Finally, regarding firewood, the annual bill amounted to €1,476 in November 2023 and in November 2022, it amounted to €1,688, a difference of 13%.
Firewood is still considered the cheapest fuel on the market.

Different regions, different prices

Prices also differ, in particular for natural gas: it is €230 more expensive in Wallonia than in Flanders (2,126 euros compared to 1,989 euros). A Brussels resident is between the two, with an average bill of 1,989 euros.

This variation is mainly explained by differences in network costs. For 2-3 months, consumers have preferred fixed rate contracts.
