Munich According to experts, the damage caused by the violent storms in Germany in the past few days is likely to cost the insurance industry billions. The insurance broker Aon estimates the insured damage at a total of 1.6 billion euros, as announced on Monday in Hamburg.

“We assume that ‘Ylena’ and ‘Zeynep’ are among the most damaging storms in Germany,” said Aon Germany boss Jan-Oliver Thofern. “The damage would have been even greater if the trees had already carried leaves, which would have caused even more trees to fall due to the sail effect.”

The storms caused considerable damage, especially in central and northern Germany. Aon estimates that around EUR 500 million of the estimated damage was due to the first storm “Ylenia”, EUR 1 billion to hurricane “Zeynep” and EUR 100 million to “Antonia”. This corresponds to around half of the total insured storm damage in an average full year.
