Although they have been available for some time, the Córdoba Police’s non-lethal weapons had until now almost been used exclusively in fictitious scenarios, as part of personnel training. Only in a few rare cases had they been used. But this Friday morning an agent from the city of Pilar had to use it to subdue an armed person.

“It is the first time that we use them in this Department. After evaluating the situation, it was decided to use this weapon and not firearms,” he told The voice Chief Commissioner Pedro Gustavo Maldonado, from the Río Segundo Department.

“The weapon that the agent used is not the one that releases something similar to tear gas, but rather it fires synthetic projectiles,” Maldonado explained.

It is a Byrna launcher, which fires up to five 68 caliber round projectiles that can neutralize a threat at a distance of about 20 meters.

The case occurred in the city of Pilar, neighboring Río Segundo. After receiving a call, the local police went to a home where an argument was apparently taking place between a couple.

Upon arriving at the scene, on Pampa Street, the officers saw a man of about 70 years old lying on the hood of a vehicle that was moving. Inside the car was his wife. Apparently, the man intended with this action to prevent the woman from leaving the house.

As noted, the man suffers from neurological problems, which sometimes lead to his disorientation.

Fully loaded revolver

According to the Police, when the man saw the staff he became upset and entered his house. There the officers were warned by the woman that her husband had a revolver inside the house.

After several attempts by the officers to calm him down, the man partially opened the door of the house and displayed a gun, pointing it at the staff, always according to the police version.

At that moment one of the agents took out her non-lethal weapon and fired three shots with kinetic projectiles, managing to subdue the man.

After the arrival of one of the couple’s children, the man threw the gun out the window from inside the house. It was a fully loaded 32 caliber long revolver. The weapon was seized. Later, he was referred to a clinic in the city of Córdoba for treatment.
