Syria – The head of the Russian Reconciliation Center at the Russian Hmeimim base in Latakia, Major General Sergei Gashkov, announced the formation of the Hmeimim Football Club, with the support of Russian forces in Syria.
He said during the ceremony announcing the formation of the “Hmeimim” Sports Club, according to the “Sputnik” agency: “With the support of the Russian forces in Syria, the Hmeimim Football Club is being formed from students from Latakia schools.”
He added: “Above all, this will contribute to the development of children’s sports and instill in them the desire to win, and today sports will be developed in Syria with the support of Russia.”
He continued: “Russia and Syria have brotherly relations in all fields, and the football team will contribute to the development of sports in Syria. Soon we will go to Damascus to organize this club so that it plays in the Syrian league, and most likely this summer the team will go to Moscow to play with the Russian CSKA club.”
He said: “We have proceeded with the first step, which is the process of opening the Hmeimim Sports Club, and in the near future we will coordinate with the governorate to develop sports in general.”
In a related context, the administrator of the Hmeimim Club, Nada Salman, indicated: “The coaches chose 24 players from the students of Latakia schools within certain specifications, and today the equipment was distributed to the players, including balls, shoes and clothing, so that they will begin training next week at the Sports City in Latakia three times a week, and it is possible for them to go.” To the Hmeimim Training Center. He will officially enter the Syrian League next year.”
It is noteworthy that Russia owns two military bases in Syria, namely the Hmeimim Air Base in Latakia Governorate, and the Tartous Naval Base.
