Woman injured by sailfish tip near Florida

A 70-year-old woman was injured by the sharp snout tip of a sailfish that jumped out of the water and struck her as two partners on a yacht tried to fish for it off the Florida coast, authorities said.

The 100-pound fish struck the woman in the groin Tuesday as she was standing on the boat regarding 2 miles from Stuart, Florida, according to a report from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

The other occupants of the yacht applied pressure to the wound and the woman, a resident of Arnold, Maryland, was taken to Stuart for medical treatment.

The woman told sheriff’s deputies the incident happened so suddenly that she didn’t have time to react, the report said.

Sailfish are among the fastest in the sea and, like swordfish, are easily recognizable by their long sharp points.
