Woman used a popular sign to report abuse and was rescued by the authorities

Her ex-partner arrived at a relative’s house and agreed to leave, but in the middle of everything there was an argument and she wanted to leave, but he did not let her.

A Tennessee woman, allegedly kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend, has been rescued after she used a popular TikTok distress signal to alert a store cashier.

The Hickman County woman was visiting her brother last Sunday when her ex-partner, 31-year-old Johnathon Smith, showed up. At first she agreed to go with him and got into her vehicle, reports the local Tennessean media.

The man was driving by the cart when “they had a physical confrontation,” Hickman Sheriff’s Office Officer Mike Doddo said. The woman asked to get out of the vehicle, he refused, grabbed a screwdriver and threatened to kill her “telling her that if he couldn’t have her, no one could have her,” the officer detailed.

Smith then began driving recklessly before stopping at a gas station. They both got out of the car and went into the grocery store.

According to Doddo, the woman extended the palm of her hand, bent her thumb and closed all four fingers on it, showing the gesture to the local cashier. The employee understood the message and repeated the signal, receiving a confirmation from the woman.

This signal was popularized on TikTok as a way to ask for help in situations of domestic violence without alerting the abuser.

The staff called the 911 emergency number, while the cashier tried to restrain Smith by telling him that something was wrong with the register, however, the subject “realized what was happening” and left with the woman, Doddo said. .

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the truck pulling out of the parking lot. A chase ensued that lasted approximately 15 minutes before Smith crashed the car into a creek.

According to the Police, after the accident the aggressor tried to flee on foot, but was arrested and charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated domestic assault. Meanwhile, the woman was not injured and she is safe.
