Effects on blood pressure, on kidney function in adults and on the nervous system in children, even at small doses… exposure harm lead are numerous. What if the presence of lead in the air also had direct consequences on the female fertility and childbirth ? This is the finding of a study conducted by researchers from the Japanese University of Tohoku, the results of which were published in the journal Science of the Total Environment.
In demography, we speak of sex-ratio. However, according to several previous studies, this sex ratio is influenced in part by exposure to chemical substances, such as dioxins, as well as to heavy metals such as methylmercury. Lead can also have repercussions on the health of men and women: it can reduce female fertility as well as male sperm quality. According to Japanese researchers, it could therefore play a major role in the evolution of the sex ratio.
