‘Women Designing Dresses to Clean Chellanam Beach, Employed as Profanity’; Same track from the 90s
Padma movie directed by Anoop Menon has been released in theatres. The way the female characters were portrayed in this film follows many films released in the 90s. Early films portrayed sleeveless, beauty-conscious women with girlfriends as badass.
Many filmmakers portrayed them as arrogant people who took reformation. All of them used to show that they gather together to slander others. There was a time in Malayalam cinema when such scenes in movies received huge applause and bursts of laughter.
Now even in Padma, which was released in 2022, we cannot see any major changes. In the film, the heroine, who comes from outside the country to the city, has a lot of difficulty adjusting to her surroundings. The friends of Padma, played by Surabhi Lakshmi, are depicted in this way.
The characters of women in Padma are presented as those who design dresses when they go to clean Chellanam beach, and when one person is not there, they tell the other person’s crimes.
They tend to discuss other people’s personal matters when they get together. There is a scene where Padma’s friend calls out to her when Padma’s husband Ravi Shankar goes to see a psychologist. The next moment the friend calls another person and tells him this very happily. An image is created in the film that women are slanderers through this scene.
Produced under the banner of Anoop Menon Stories, Padmail featured Shankar Ramakrishnan, Surabhi Lakshmi, Anwar Sharif, Ambi, Marina Michael, Mala Parvathy and Shruti Rajinikanth in the lead roles. And there are about twenty new faces. Ninoy Varghese composed the music with lyrics by Anoop Menon and Dr. Sukesh.
