Nominations were made for the ECO Institute for Ecology and the Carinthian Tourism Region Cooperation. The award ceremony took place as part of the “Dare to think!” event series.

“Dare to think!” – Under this motto, the Carinthian Science Association, headed by Horst Peter Groß, has been organizing a platform together with cooperation partners since 2013 on which committed people from different organizations and institutions can take up impulses for assuming social responsibility and question the possibilities of their own social contributions. “The aim is that the desire is also followed by action in the respective regions, companies, organizations and institutionssaid Horst Peter Groß from the organizers.

This year, measures, steps, ideas and initiatives were discussed in the event center at Weissensee under the aspect of climate change as a global challenge under the premise “Think globally, act locally”.

Since 2017, the KWF Kärntner Wirtschaftsförderfonds and Kärntner Sparkasse AG have been using the series of events to award the sustainability awards “KWF.nachhaltig” and “Förderpreis.nachhaltig der Kärntner Sparkasse AG”.

The EU’s Green Deal stipulates that all member states will become climate neutral by 2050. People, companies and societies have to adapt to changing circumstances and sustainability aspects are increasingly being taken into account when assessing funding projectssaid KWF board member Sandra Venus.

Under these circumstances, projects from Carinthian companies and cooperation initiatives were brought to the fore this year, whose business models are located in the ecological economic segment and who live the topic of sustainability. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals were used as a benchmark in the evaluation.

The “KWF.nachhaltig 2023” award goes to woody

The “KWF.nachhaltig” prize, worth EUR 5,000, went to woody GmbH from Sittersdorf, who are responsible for the production of their Wooden shoes (clogs, mules, sandals, boots and sneakers) has always relied on sustainable raw materials. In addition, a 100% vegan shoe upper is being developed with research institutions, a reforestation project is being carried out, wood waste from production is used to heat the company premises and investments are being made in the further expansion of photovoltaic systems. People with special needs are successfully integrated into the company and as part of the “Iniciativ Angola” development initiative, young people receive free shoes.

Trastic wins the “Förderpreis.nachhaltig from Kärntner Sparkasse AG”

The “Förderpreis.nachhaltig from Kärntner Sparkasse AG” in the amount of EUR 3,000 was awarded to the Trastic GmbH from Villach for the production of Furniture panels made from recycled plastic awarded, which saves up to 3.2 tons of climate-relevant greenhouse gases per ton of recycled plastic used. The use of recycled plastic is a sustainable alternative to other materials. In addition, the energy-efficient “zero-waste production process” supports the goal of a climate-neutral EU. “With the European Green Deal, the EU has also given banks an essential role in the transition to a more sustainable economy, which our sector assumes with great responsibilitysaid Kärntner Sparkasse board director Gabriele Semmelrock-Werzer during the award ceremony.

The ECO Institute for Ecology implements around 50 national and international projects in these areas every year Biodiversity research, Protected area development and sustainable regional development.
