World Bank Sanctions ₹1228 Crore Loan to Kerala for Disaster Preparedness and Climate Impact

Thiruvananthapuram: The World Bank has sanctioned a loan of 1228 crores to Kerala to prepare for natural calamities, epidemics and climate impacts. Earlier, the World Bank had announced a financial assistance of 125 million dollars for Kerala.

Apart from this, fresh loan. It is estimated that 50 lakh people affected by flood will be benefited through these two projects. This assistance will be of great relief to Kerala in critical areas like coastal erosion and water resource management.

The World Bank has assessed that as a state located on the southern Indian coast, Kerala is more prone to natural disasters and the effects of climate change.

Floods and landslides in 2021 killed many people in Kerala. Moreover, the World Bank has estimated that more than 100 million dollars in damages have been caused and such disasters have negatively affected the lives of people, including women and farmers.

At the same time, this amount can be used for future planning and policy formulation after disasters. Also, the amount from the loan of Rs 1228 crore can be used to prepare the climate budget.

During his US visit, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had a meeting with the World Bank Managing Director and representatives at the World Bank headquarters. The visit was made in the context of availability of loans in the state including the Rebuild Kerala project
