World Eyes on Trump-Putin Summit: Potential for Peace Amidst Calls for Truce before Negotiations

by James Carter Senior News Editor

The spotlight of the world focused on Alaska. In Anchorage everything is ready for the historic meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin who, on paper, offers a serious chance for peace in Ukraine after three and a half years of hard conflict. The face to face between the two leaders, however, presents itself as a real chess game: “There are 25% probability that is not going well”, the American president put his hands on, however, saying he is convinced that the leader of the Kremlin wants an agreement.

But Kiev freezes expectations: ‘Negotiations can only be productive after reaching a ceased fire’, writes on X the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, on the eve of the summit.

Meanwhile, the inhabitants of Alaska are manifesting as a sign of solidarity with Ukraine throughout the state. At least 16 events are scheduled until Saturday, from Fairbanks to Kodiak in Ketchikan, writes the non-profit network of news that newsroom.

If the summit will end positively, Trump has assured that he will immediately call Volodymyr Zelensky to organize a “second meeting”, a trilateral summit. “It will be very, very important because at that point it will be the one in which they will agree. I already have three locations in mind,” he assured, also venturing the hypothesis of “including someone of the Europeans”. If, however, the face to face should go wrong “I will not call anyone”, neither Zelensky nor the Europeans, and “I will return to Washington”, warned the American president. It would remain other than the weapon of sanctions against Moscow, waved several times but never implemented so far, except for those secondary to India for purchases of Russian oil.

Admitting that one ceased the immediate fire is unlikely in spite of the pressing of the Ukrainian leader and its allies, the Tycoon has declared itself more “interested in immediate peace”. And for this he will work: “We will do our best,” he assured.
In a possible peace agreement, according to Trump – also security guarantees in Kiev under the umbrella of the United States, but not NATO, would also return – according to Trump.

And the future security of Ukraine was at the center of the meeting between Zelensky and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The two leaders in London agreed that the top in Alaska offers “a concrete chance of progress, as long as Putin acts in such a way as to try to be serious about peace”. And as well as the Ukrainian president, the European leaders remain at the window waiting to know the results of the awaited encounter between hopes and fears. A new videocal on the weekend is likely to discuss the results of the summit, waiting for Trump to get alive.
To convince Moscow to put an end to hostilities, The Donald arrives in Alaska with a series of proposals in your pocket: on the plate it will offer from the revocation of some penalties to the possibility for Russia to access minerals and rare lands in Alaska and in the Ukrainian territories currently occupied by Moscow. If for Putin, whose economy is increasingly in difficulty under the weight of the war, it will be enough is all to see. The Kremlin appears at the moment more interested in the Ukrainian territories, and their recognition under Russian control. “There will be an exchange,” Trump once again reiterated without going into details and despite the opposition of Kiev and Europe.
Among the hypotheses to the study are to follow the models of Korea or the West Bank, so as to circumvent the limits imposed by the Ukrainian Constitution and the resistance of the allies. But for Putin the divergences between the two banks of the Atlantic are an opportunity to present Kiev and his European allies – and not Russia – like real obstacles at the end of the war, and to try to lay the foundations to separate the dossier of relations between Washington and Moscow from the destiny of Ukraine.
Between Giravolte and expected Road Trump, however, he presents himself to Anchorage – according to the observers – as the one who has more to lose. Putin’s position is very different, managed to conquer a summit in American territory, to deviate (at least for now) threats of sanctions and, above all, relaunch Russia as one of the few world powers with legitimate spheres of influence. In addition to creating the short -term goal of being able to ‘court’ Trump himself hoping to get what he wants.
