Inflammatory bowel diseases, IBD, include Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. In France, approximately 300,000 people live with one of these two diseases. May 19 is dedicated to World IBD Day, an opportunity for AFA Crohn RCH France to raise awareness of the some 8,000 new cases diagnosed each year.

IBD includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.

Among those affected by crohn’s disease and the ulcerative colitis, include children, particularly affected by the increase in cases. If these inflammatory bowel disease most often appear between the ages of 15 and 35, their frequency has doubled in recent years in the 13-19 age group.

The world IBD day, which takes place on May 19, is coordinated in France by the only national association recognized and committed to the fight against IBD, the AFA Crohn RCH France association. This year, the theme chosen for the World Day is “Disordered environment, endangered intestines? “, an opportunity to raise awareness and warn about the impact of environmental factors in the development of these chronic intestinal diseases.

Understand the role of environmental factors in the development of IBD

In the development of IBD, several mechanisms are involved such as a genetic predisposition and one gut microbiota imbalance (dysbiosis) causing dysfunctions in the intestinal immune system. But environmental factors could also play a key role, explaining the increase in cases observed for several years:

  • The tobacco ;
  • The atmospheric pollution ;
  • Food additives;
  • Ultra-processed foods;
  • Pesticides and other phytosanitary products.

Conversely, protective environmental factors, such as breastfeeding, also play a role.

AFA Crohn RCH France emphasizes the importance of conducting in-depth research on the impact of these environmental factors to reduce the rise in IBD cases, especially in children. Another demand made on the occasion of the world day, a better recognition of these diseases for which there is no cure and which have a strong impact on daily life. Both ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease cause urgent and urgent diarrheaof the abdominal painof the joint, dermatology and eye problems and an fatigue intense. These diseases profoundly affect the personal, social and professional lives of patients, sometimes from childhood.

To better inform the general public and mobilize all the actors concerned, events will be organized throughout the week of May 19 throughout France, in particular:

At the same time, the association is proposing a challenge for World IBD Day 2023, called “the flower in the belly”. Participants are invited to illustrate the theme of IBD with a drawing, a photo, a montage. The creations are to be shared on social networks and/or sent to the following address: à [email protected]. IBD will be in the spotlight on May 19, but the AFA Crohn RCH France wants real awareness so that IBD becomes public health priorities.
